Qualifying Events Help You Get Health Insurance After Enrollment Deadlines Have Passed

Are you aware that the window of time to get a health insurance policy is closing soon? Those who don’t have health insurance have until March 31, 2014 for enrollment. Missing this deadline means that there is no way to get a policy unless you experience one of the qualifying events that allow you to enroll in a plan. The qualifying events are:

  • Getting married
  • Having, fostering and/or adopting a child
  • Making a permanent move to a new location with different insurance options
  • Losing insurance coverage due to divorce, loss of job, expiration of COBRA, ineligible for Medicaid or CHIP, or health plan becomes decertified
  • Those already enrolled in Marketplace coverage can alter plans in the event of a change in income or household status that effects tax credit eligibility or cost-sharing reductions

Most deadlines for these special enrollment periods are 60 days after the date of the qualifying event. But it’s always best to not wait any longer than need be in order to begin health insurance coverage after a qualifying event.
